Midweek Racing Preview: Wednesday 25/5/16

It's a quiet Wednesday around the country with meetings from Gawler, Sale and Canterbury. They're all quite stock standard cards, but as usual there are some quality gallopers engaged at each track that will be worth backing today and following moving forward.

Gawler

The track is rated a Soft (5) at the time of writing with rain forecast for Wednesday so we may see a downgrade before or during the meeting. The rail is out +4m the entire circuit.

Race 1 2122m Kingsford Hotel/SABOIS Distance Maiden Plate

Three-Years-Old and Upwards. Maiden. No sex restriction. Set Weights.

Quite a few of these tend to settle close to the speed but none of them are natural leaders. Lankan Summer may go forward and take up the running.

Sanima Star should break through for her Maiden victory here. This time in she has been consistent without winning but this looks the easiest field she has contested. At her last go she was 2nd beaten 4.2L at her first try at this distance range. She's a month between runs which is a slight concern but I'm banking on her being fit enough to win.

Oakbank Reign looks the logical danger. Since a freshen up he has run 3rd beaten 6.5L at this track and trip and then went to Penola in a 1700m Maiden and ran 2nd but was beaten 9.5L.

Summary: The top two in the market clearly have the best form and grounding coming in to this, but I'm with Sanima Star. She gets the weight advantage off Oakbank Reign and has been knocking on the door all prep. Lankan Summer is the most lightly raced runner in the field and is on trial at the trip for the first time. She is the best of the rest.

Race 2 1111m Schweppes Mixers/SABOIS Maiden Plate

Three-Years-Old and Upwards. Maiden. Fillies and Mares. Set Weights.

The Castle Kat should go forward with Touch, Bitter Twist and Quivers. Gasoline Alley should be able to hold a spot from the inside if Dom Tourneur wants to.

Gasoline Alley is clearly the one here. She ran 2nd on debut over this track/trip beating home Brimarvi Equiada who has since won three times. She then went to a 3 Year Old BM70 over 1100m at Morphettville and finished 3rd behind Evil Dreams. Ignore her last run before a spell when up to a mile and perhaps at the end of her tether. The blinkers go on today and she should be far too good for these.

The Castle Kat, Bitter Twist and Touch look to be the others with minor claims but it is hard to envisage Gasoline Alley getting beaten here.

Summary: Back Gasoline Alley with confidence, she should be a class above.

Race 5 1111m Wolf Blass Gold Handicap

No age restriction. Class 2. No sex restriction. Handicap.

Harrebs Time and I Dream Of Gina should go forward. Snipetron settled last at his 1st up run but he was slowly away, he could go forward with a clean get away.

I'm with the local horse here Alaskan Jade. 1st up last preparation she ran on from back in the field to beat Vicki's Boy who is a very talented horse. Following that she was beaten 3L to Hearts Ablaze/Royal Rumble and then beaten 2.3L in a decent 3 Year Old BM70. She draws 1 so could hold a spot handy to the speed and although I don't like backing horses 1st up on wet tracks, she seems to handle the conditions and is well weighted here.

Snipetron looks the danger. He won on debut at this track/trip and then went for a spell. 1st up he was slowly away and last before not making much ground to run 7th in quite a strong 3 Year Old BM70, beaten 4.4L. This is a lot easier and if he jumps with them it will help his cause.

Social Lane has been racing well and is back in grade here. He could run a nice race again.

Summary: It's tough to split the top two. Snipetron has had the run this prep but Alaskan Jade is trained on the track, gets the 2kg weight advantage and defeated some handy types last time in. I think one of them wins the race and I'm siding with Alaskan Jade!

Sale

The track is rated a Soft (5) at the time of writing but with decent weather forecast we may get an upgrade. The rail is the true position.

Race 1 1200m Laurels Function Centre 3 Year Old Maiden Plate≈

Three-Years-Old. Maiden. No sex restriction. Set Weights.

Hard to predict the speed with the debutantes in the race but Russian Rick should go forward.

Strangest Dream may end up wanting further than this but she is more than capable of sprinting well fresh. She ran 3rd in a pretty decent Maiden on debut after coming from well back in the field over this trip before eventually getting out to 1600m. Henry Dwyer's stable is flying at the moment and this filly looks promising. She wasn't far off Silent Sedition last prep!

This looks a good race for Blithe Belle to break her Maiden in. She ran 2nd to the smart Chase The Horizon on debut and then struck a hot Maiden that was won by Sailing By. 1st up after a 40 week spell she settled midfield and hit the line strongly when beaten a head over 1100m at Pakenham on the synthetic surface. She should appreciate the extra 100m here and gets every chance to win.

Watch the Chris Waller debutante Sozzini. It's been well backed but I'm not sure how much of that is the Waller factor.

Sumary: I think Strangest Dream will end up the best horse in this race and her form stacks up nicely from her 1st prep. Expecting some natural improvement here and she can sprint well fresh. Blithe Belle looks the biggest danger.

Race 8 1717m Ladbrokes BM64 Handicap

No age restriction. BenchMark 64. No sex restriction. Handicap.

Adolphin should lead with Landslide, The Contortionist and Beltum close to the speed.

I'm not sure if Sikeleli Afrika's 1st up win was a complete anomaly or a sign that he has come back a seriously improved horse this preparation but I am willing to be on board just in case of the latter. She was dominant on that occasion, clearing out late to win by 5L in quite good time. She draws barrier 7 here and will carry 56.5kg and gets her chance to show whether or not that 1st up win was an outlier or not.

The main dangers include Landslide who won in good style at Warrnambool over 1700m last time out on a very Heavy track. The 3kg claim helps here. Three Points looks the other logical chance. He closed well last start when beaten 1.2L to Justa Hint over the mile.

Summary: Sticking with Sikeleli Afrika on the back of her dominant 1st up win.

Canterbury

The track is rated a Good (3) with some rain forecast during the day but it will most likely hit after the races are done and dusted. The rain is in the true position.

Race 5 1550m McGrath Estate Agents Handicap

Three-Years-Old. BenchMark 70. No sex restriction. Handicap.

I'm sticking with Supply And Demand here. He was super impressive winning 1st up when he savaged the line late over 1000m to beat Sangiovese. 2nd up he went to the Scone Guineas and was only beaten 1.7L. He ran through the line nicely there and was 1000-1400m. 3rd up and out to 1600m I think he profiles perfectly to win the race.

Dark Steel looks a danger. He was okay when 3rd to Sir Bacchus at Rosehill in a 3 Year Old BM75 before finishing alongside Supply And Demand in the Scone Guineas. The reason I have Supply And Demand on top out of that race is I feel he is better suited to the rise in trip. This colt just grinds away at the moment and seems to lack the turn of foot required to improve from the placings to the winners stall. Perhaps the rise in distance will help him though!

Summary: Supply And Demand has the most upside in this race and appears to be suited at the mile. Backing him here!
