Morphettville Preview: Saturday 23/4/16

There are 4 Stakes races on the card at Morphettville on Saturday and they all look to be very strong and competitive. A good group of 2 year olds line up in the Dequetteville, the sprinters will contest the Weight For Age RN Irwin Stakes, the 3 year old fillies will clash in what looks to be a very strong Schweppervescence Stakes and the Redelva looks to be a cracking race for the 3 year old sprinters.

The track is rated a Good (4) at the time of writing, with fine and sunny weather forecast for Friday and Saturday. The rail is out 6m from the 1200m to the winning post and out 3m the remainder. With the rail out 6m, you might not want to be spotting the leader too much of a start turning for home.

Race 1 2020m Rex Thompson's 60th Birthday Handicap

No age restriction. BenchMark 90. No sex restriction. Handicap.

The speed should be pedestrian in a field of five here. Stimulatte can lead them from perhaps Survived and River's Lane next.

River's Lane was a very good winner last time out in this grade. His 2000m record is surprisingly good and he is racing as well as he ever has. In this small field he is very well weighted and looks to be a good winning chance.

Flying Casino was a dominant winner in the Oakbank Cup. Following that he was 2nd to River's Lane coming from the tail of the field. He can win again.

Killarney Kid has won his last 2 (the Stawell and Edenhope Cups) and is racing well since joining Darren Weir. While he has won well both times and he must be a good chance here, the fields he beat have been ordinary and the $1.85 they're offering looks poison.

Survived was a good 3rd in the Golden Mile at Bendigo behind Nevis and was then only fair behind that same galloper again. Up to the 2000m suits but has to give them weight.

Stimulatte was well beaten by Flying Casino in the Oakbank cup and probably wants it a bit further.

Advice: River's Lane $7.50 looks massive overs. Could be worth something if you're keen to bet early.

Race 2 1050m RSL ANZAC Appeal Handicap

Two-Years-Old. No class restriction. Colts and Geldings. Handicap.

The speed is mostly unknown from the debutantes, but of those Hard Promise showed considerable early speed in it's recent trial. Blue Tycoon led on debut and should cross and go forward again.

Flames Of Life looks a nice type from his trials. To my eye he looked to float along and only did as much as he was ever asked. The addition of blinkers for his debut is a big positive for mine.

Blue Tycoon was 2nd to Samara Dancer on debut and that horse went to Melbourne and one a Blue Diamond Prelude. He wanted to have a look around on debut and has been gelded which should help him concentrate!

Hard Promise showed a lot of dash in a recent trial and looked to be cruising. I think he has a lot of ability and can win this.

Oak Door was fair on debut but did hit the line nicely. The blinkers go on here and you have to respect the Smerdon stable, especially if there is any money for it.

Time Out was a decent 4th in a strong race on debut. Trialled nicely behind Flames of Life. Captain Duffy also trialled well in the same trial. Watch.

Advice: Flames of Life looks good each way value here at $7.50/$2.15.

Race 3 1100m UBET Adelaide Festival Of Racing Handicap (Heat 7 of SA Sprint Series)

No age restriction. BenchMark 70. No sex restriction. Handicap.

War Thunder, Daunting Dancer and Highest Note should all drive though and be handy. Regal Spur may come across from the outside. The speed looks like it should be genuine here.

Herenoa is a horse with ability. The problem for punters is 2 wins from 14 starts makes him costly to follow. He was only beaten 3.2L in the Wylie at Listed level over this track and trip near the end of last preparation. His trial was very nice for this and his first up record (4:1-3-0) says he should be ready to go.

Daunting Dancer ran some nice races last time in without winning, mostly in Mares grade. She has a good first up record as well (8:3-1-2) but is 0/16 at this track (8 minor placings).

Silent Whisper was only okay last time in a race that I thought he would be super competitive in. He was only beaten 3.5L by the flying Shaf but he was entitled to do more. He gets in with 58kg after the claim for Spain and must be a chance again.

Highest Note was a good winner in lower class last time and can run well again. Regal Spur raced consistently around this grade last time in but he was only fair first up. War Thunder was 3rd to Call Me Curtis last time when sticking on okay after being on speed.

Advice: I really like Herenoa 1st up here. He should be hard to beat. $4 looks about right.

Race 4 1200m Camp Quality F&M BM80

No age restriction. BenchMark 80. Fillies and Mares. Handicap.

There looks to be an absolute stack of speed in this. Saltarello should press on towards the lead with Brinkley Bliss, Regal Magnus and Belle Melba. Rationality and Our Harmony should slot in behind those.

Our Harmony has been good this preparation without winning. She ran home strongly for 3rd last time at Mornington after being wide with no cover. She is very well in at the weights here with 55.5kg after Jessica Payne's claim. From barrier 4 with the pace on up front she should get her chance.

Rationality trialled nicely for her return here. Her better form last prep was over 1400/1600m but I fancy 1200m here 1st up should be fine. The query with here is where she gets in from the outside barrier.

Regal Magnus seems to be at her best at this track and trip (5:1-3-0) with her only miss being a 4th placing. She won well last start sitting on pace and fighting off all challengers, including the smart Chateau Cheval. Craig Williams, 54kg and barrier 2 are all big ticks.

Saltarello ran 2nd to Beautiful Flyer in 3 year old grade last start and that horse looks to have a bit of ability. She trialled fantastically in very slick time in preparation for this.

Brinkley Bliss has been costly for me. When I back her she doesn't win and when I don't she does. She is a good horse though and 55kg here for Spain helps. Belle Melba was 3rd to Shaf last time and runs well at this track (3:2-0-1). Tycoon Queen and Lady Andress are chances too in an open affair.

Advice: Our Harmony looks tough to beat. Should get the gun run and is weighted to win. $5 looks a good price too.

Race 5 1050m MAC Drink Driving? Grow Up Dequetteville Stakes - Listed $100k

Two-Years-Old. No class restriction. Fillies. Set Weights.

This looks a really good, strong edition of the Dequetteville this year. Moshki, Moqla, Areti and Motown Lil have all shown a lot of speed in their careers so far. If Not Now When and Extra Olives can also be handy.

I'm really keen on Serenely Discreet here. I love when a 2 year old can settle back and run home to score, I think it shows they've got some genuine ability. She won on debut after settling last and getting up on the fence to score. She was slow out, some 20L off the leader and absolutely motored home to win a fast trial in preparation for this. She must jump with them to be competitive, but in a race with some genuine speed up front the $10 they put up (she's into $6 already) looks silly.

Moshki won the Cinderella here at her last start running them off their legs and kicking clear to win impressively. Barrier 3 helps and she's been freshened up for this. The runner up in the Cinderella has since franked the form.

If Not Now When won the rich 2 year old Vobis race at Bendigo on debut and then narrowly won as a short priced favourite at Cranbourne. She looks to possess plenty of ability. Barrier 10 looks tricky though with the speed inside her.

Moqla won here on the 2nd of April beating a pretty handy field easily. She showed a lot of pace and was able to kick off of that. She will do no work from barrier 2 and be hard to beat again.

Areti won well on debut but I have doubts over the strength of her opposition. She then went to the Blue Diamond and was very fast away but was the first horse beaten. Trialled really well for this.

Of the others: Neapolitan has won 2/3 but I'm not sure she has the right form lines for this. Motown Lil is speedy and ran 2nd to Ariaz last start which started favourite here last week and ran 2nd. Extra Olives beat Moshki on debut and then ran okay in a Blue Diamond Preview. Posh Journey won what looks to be a pretty strong Maiden last Wednesday beating Helmara into 4th who ran okay. Watch the Corsten's debutante Modern Wonder. When that stable bets they get it right more often than not.

Advice: Back Serenely Discreet, especially if you can still find a price. The $6 looks about the right odds but I wouldn't be surprised to see her shorten further.

Race 6 1100m Hughes Chauffered Limousines R N Irwin Stakes - Group 3 $120k

No age restriction. No class restriction. No sex restriction. Standard Weight for Age.

Another good race here. Sandhill Flash will go forward with I Am Gypsy. Northern Zhar may come across from out wide and Karacatis and Heart Of A Lion can settle handy also. The speed doesn't look to be too strong.

Tuscan Sling brings A+ form lines in to this compared to the rest. She won the Listed Christmas Stakes beating Reldas before a freshen up. After that, she won the 1200m Bellmaine at Group 3 level beating Azkadellia (2nd to Winx in a Doncaster, won the Queen of the Turf) after being 3 wide outside the leaders to whole way. She then went to 1400m and was beaten 0.2L by Azkadellia again. She's so well in at Weight For Age here. Is the winner.

La Passe was up for a long time last prep but kept improving as it went on. She won two Group 2 races over 1400m at Flemington in the lead up to the Myer Classic where she finished in the back half. Her 1st up record is good and she will get a good run from barrier 2.

Daytona Grey was a great winner of the Manihi first up. He goes up in weight at the WFA scale and meets his rivals worse off. A repeat of that effort would see him go close again though. From that race, I Am Gyspsy was a very good 2nd. She was only beaten a head and will be able to find the front pretty easily here if she chooses to. Nostradamus was okay. We know he is a horse with talent but I feel he needs to be gelded if they want to consistently get the best out of him. Northern Zhar was huge in my opinion. He drew wide and did a stack of work to be handy and stuck on pretty well considering. He's drawn wide again though and may get a tough run.

Runway Star races well in Adelaide and is now with Philip Stokes after being with Peter Moody. She won well 1st up in a small field and may go on with it. Heart Of A Lion isn't hopeless either, as his 4th to Miss Promiscuity in the Monash at the end of last prep shows.

Advice: Tuscan Sling - Daylight - The Rest. Back her.

Race 7 1800m Schweppervescence Stakes (Registered as Auraria Stakes) - Group 3 $120k

Three-Years-Old. No class restriction. Fillies. Set Weights plus Penalties.

This looks a fantastic edition if this race this year! There doesn't appear to be much speed in this. Best Fortune and Sailing By should go forward from inside draws. Artesian can be handy. Do the Macdonald pair C'est Beau La Vie and Beluga Blue try and head forward from the outside gates? Comprende could setlle near the speed from barrier 1 as well.

Concubine won her Maiden dominantly before going to the Laelia and running extremely well. She drew 12 there and ended up wide and near the rear of the field. She was flushed out very wide on the corner, whereas most of the runners that beat her home had good runs nearer the inside. She hit the line well and I fancy with a kinder run in transit from barrier 8 she is going to be right in the finish here.

If Street Spun can settle closer in this than she did in the Laelia she is a very good chance. She drew 6 in that event and ended up last. Her last 400/200 were very good threading through near the fence and the 1800m looks ideal for her here. Barrier 12 looks a tricky draw but if she can settle midfield or better with cover she will be in this.

On breeding Comprende shouldn't get the trip, but her last run suggested the 1800m looks ideal. She settled inside Beluga Blue in the Laelia, she got the inside runs while Beluga Blue was forced wide around the turn. She finished 3rd there and was strong through the line.

Silent Sedition beat a smart one easily 1st up this preparation. She then went to Bendigo, winning the Guineas by 1.75L over the mile in good fashion. At her latest start she was beaten 3L by Bengal Cat over 1600m at Sandown. That horse then won the Vobis Gold Reef in good fashion at Caulfield. Looks a slight query at 1800m to my eye and barrier 13 doesn't help her.

Beluga Blue was fantastic in the Laelia last time. She got back and was forced wide on the turn but she still hit the line strongly. Won the Hill Smith over 1800m so the trip suits, but barrier 19 doesn't. Her stablemate C'est Beau La Vie is in great form this preparation, winning 3 of her 4 runs this time in. Last start she was super in winning the Laelia after getting a dream run, defeating a few of her key rivals here. Barrier 20 makes it incredibly difficult to win again.

Sailing By landed in the perfect spot last time in the Laelia and ran a good race finishing 2nd. Form barrier 3 here today she's drawn to get the gun run again. She failed at 2000m where she didn't run the trip out and the trainer has a query on her at the 1800m.

Cry If I Want To is superbly bred (Street Cry x Zarita) and won in dominant fashion on debut. This is harder but she looks like she could be good. Big watch here.

Artesian was defeated in BM64 grade before going to 3 year old open grade and running a good 2nd to Cool Chap over 2000m at Caulfield. That horse has since run a good 2nd to a very smart SA/QLD Derby bound horse. She is one we know gets the trip and should be included in multiples.

A Little Loose apparently didn't handle the wet track in the Adrian Knox in Sydney. She's lightly raced and looks like 1800m should suit her well.

Advice: Concubine looks over the odds at $11/$3.50. She looks a good each way bet.

Race 8 1100m Projection Graphics Redelva Stakes - Listed $100k

Three-Years-Old. No class restriction. No sex restriction. Set Weights plus Penalties.

Burst Away and Very Choosy should go forward from wide out. Miss Gunpowder and American Star will push through from the inside also. Super Cash and Don't Doubt Mamma should get trails behind those.

Super Cash looks to be a filly going places. She was 3rd first up behind Almighty Girl/Secret Agenda at Moonee Valley. She then won very well down the straight in the Moomba. She drew wide in the PJ Bell in Sydney and ended up 5 wide and last. She made a long sustained run and was super in running 5th. With a perfect draw (5) here she should be right in the finish.

Miss Gunpowder was good 1st up in running 2nd to Viddora over 1050m. Her last 50m was the most pleasing part of her race and she draws 1 here. Tourneur rides today and she will be very competitive. Giving weight to all of these though.

Don't Doubt Mamma is a very good racehorse. She won the Listed Lexus Hybrid in dominant fashion at Flemington in the Spring. 1st up she won the Group 3 Vanity beating a very good field. She was beaten 2.25L to the smart Badawiya at her latest run. There is a bit of a query with her at 1100m, with all of her best runs coming at 1400m or beyond.

Viddora beat Miss Gunpowder last start after sitting wide without cover the whole way, it was some win! She is a good horse and is a massive chance again, but this is harder.

Burst Away is a talented horse and is speedy, the same can be said about Very Choosy. Cocoa Doll looks like she has ability but this looks too hard at this stage.

Advice: Want to back Super Cash but anything under $3.20 would be too short. $4.60 about Miss Gunpowder looks to be value.
