Picture: The Murray Valley Standard
Racing this Wednesday comes to us from Murray Bridge, Canterbury and Sandown Lakeside. I like the look of the Murray Bridge card in a betting sense, but Canterbury (no bets) and Sandown (one bet) don't fill me with a lot of confidence. Both are meetings with some handy gallopers, but there are too many races with too many chances for me to confidently bet in.
As always though, I've had a look at each race from the Wednesday meeting from South Australia, with some nice races on the card and some progressive types of horses engaged.
Murray Bridge
The track is rated a Good (3) and should remain that way, with warm and fine weather ahead. The rail is out 3m from the 840m-WP, out 3m WP Back to 1500m, and true the remainder.
Race 1 906m Maiden - $12k
Three-Years-Old and Upwards. Maiden. No sex restriction. Set Weights.
Never Without You, Brimarvi Equiada, Clever Tommy and O'Well have all shown pace previously. Not sure what the unraced brigade will do.
Never Without You has raced 3 times for 3 seconds. Two of those 2nd's were behind Infinity Queen (handy) and Rock Status (won well on Saturday). Those runs have him right in the mix here. Captain Mirage ran a 2.5L 2nd to Streetcar Illusion on debut and has to be a chance here. Svendita ran behind a smart one on debut and was then beaten 2.75L over this track and trip at its second start and is not without hope. Watch the market moves for the debutantes.
Bets: Never Without You has the strongest form lines of these. 1 unit win bet.
Race 2 1206m Three Year Old Maiden - $12k
Three-Years-Old. Maiden. No sex restriction. Set Weights.
Magnus Magic, On Duty and Alberdini can all press forward here. Astro Vita can settle handy also. Not sure about the debutantes.
This is easily the weakest field Alberdini has contested in its career so far. He's been 2nd to Battle Brewing and Burst Away before. Last start he was 4th to Viddora who beat Miss Gunpowder on Saturday. Looks the winner here. Astro Vita looks to have some ability. She ran 3rd at Bordertown 1st up and the runner up has since won. Magnus Magic ran 2nd to Streetcar Illusion 1st up and can improve further here. As with the first, watch the market for any leads on the debutantes.
Bets: Alberdini should break through in this. 2 unit win bet.
Race 3 1406m Maiden - $12k
Two-Years-Old and Upwards. Maiden. No sex restriction. Set Weights.
Speed from Dollar For Dollar from out wide with Hantuchova and Seneca's Pride pushing forward. Platinum Set and Sixteen again may press forward from inside drawns.
Dollar For Dollar was fantastic on debut, sitting three wide without cover and kicking away turning for home only to be collared right on the line. With a kinder run it can win this. Social Set ran 3rd beaten 0.5L to Beau Acre last start over 1400m. That horse has shown ability. Playboy Lane looks to have come back from a spell in good order, running two nice races this time in. Seneca's Pride put in easily it's career best performance 1st up, it can be prominent here. Hantuchova has run 2 nice races either side of a disappointing performance.
Bets: I think Dollar for Dollar goes one better than on debut. 1 unit win bet.
Race 4 2210m BenchMark 60 - $15k
No age restriction. BenchMark 60. No sex restriction. Handicap.
Go Carol Go should press forward form the outside gate and be right there early. Power Glen and Belle Of The South will also be prominent. The hurdler Dumosa could press on towards the top also.
I think Go Carol Go has been racing like the 2200m should suit. She was run off her legs last start over the mile and ground home, running through the line well. If she stays she is hard to beat. Searaven was 2nd to Swedish Bitters in a 2100m BM64 last start, beating 3rd home comfortably. Power Glen got his Maiden out of the way last time out over 2100m at Gawler. He can run well again in this, although 59kg and barrier 10 is tricky. Nullarbor has been racing consistently in this grade in the South East, the same can be said for Got The Edge. They both have some claims in this.
Bets: Go Carol Go is a top chance if she runs the trip. 1 unit win bet.
Race 5 1406m Class One - $15k
No age restriction. Class 1. No sex restriction. Handicap.
Speed from Benjiddah and Super Swift from wide. Meadows Caddy can be handy from the inside. There doesn't seem to be too much speed in this.
Ritzy ran well behind De Jorvik over 1300m and was then outclassed in the Laelia, but was only beaten 6.7L so she wasn't disgraced. This is obviously easier and she gets the blinkers for the first time. Shark Mirage was 3rd beaten 0.4L to Battle Of Hastings in a Class 2 1500m race at Gawler last time. He ran okay behind Shaf three back. Pollywagon has been racing consistently and is close to a win.
Bets: It looks Ritzy's day to get back in the winners circle. She's giving them some weight but she should be a bit too good. 2 unit win bet.
Race 6 1406m BenchMark 70 (Heat 5 Autumn Series) - $15k
No age restriction. BenchMark 70. No sex restriction. Handicap.
Svetski, Back On Track and Sheez On Top should all cross from out wide. Tunisia Traveller should press on from the inside and Wise Journey can sit handy behind those.
Wise Journey was a top winner on a Soft track first up carrying 61kg, giving the place getters 6/7kg. He is 2/3 at this track. Joyful Journey was 5th (of 5) behind Star Fortune first up since coming from Sydney. Fancy the 1400m first up on a Soft track wasn't ideal and she was only beaten 1.7L. Also gets the blinkers for the first time here. Tunisia Traveller was 3rd to Cocoa Doll last start. She's in good form and will run well again. Flask won a Class 2 by 5L before running 3rd to C'est Beau La Vie at Oakbank and that form looks strong now. Sheez On Top was a good 3rd to Star Fortune before running 10th beaten 3.6L to Regal Magnus in Fillies and Mares grade. Back On Track was racing well in BM64 grade before stepping up to BM82 grade and finishing back in the fields. Back to this class he should be competitive. Edgewood is a horse with ability. His 4th to Northern Zhar reads well and he was okay 1st up.
Bets: A very open race with a number of horses that could easily win. No bets here!
Race 7 1606m BenchMark 64 (Heat 8 Provincial Super Series) - $15k
No age restriction. BenchMark 64. No sex restriction. Handicap.
Another Al and Pride Of America will press forward from the inside. On A Dream can be handy and Duck Dynasty may have to roll forward from an outside draw.
On A Dream was 4th to the in form Mihany last start. 2nd in that race ran 2nd in the Port Adelaide Guineas and the 3rd horse was placed in a good race at Caulfield. He is racing in good form and will be very competitive. Super Haze is in good form this time in. Was a winner 1st up over 1400m and was 3rd over 2400m last start so is sharply back in trip here, but looks to have considerable ability. Tuscan Fever is racing well and up to the mile here definitely suits. Duck Dynasty was a good 3rd last time out but it could be tricky from barrier 14 for him here. Some Do beat River's Lane in a BM75 two back and that horse has since won in town. His last start was a forgive run.
Bets: Again this race looks difficult, perhaps On A Dream or Super Haze.
Race 8 1206m BenchMark 64 - $15k
No age restriction. BenchMark 64. No sex restriction. Handicap.
Big field to finish here and as such there should be speed. Highland Henry, Nimasael, Lady Hederaj, Exalted Appeal, Golden Buckleboo and Miss Margarita will be amongst those to go forward.
Core Breach ran close 3rds behind two handy horses at his first two runs this time in. May not have handled Oakbank after that and wasn't beaten far on a Soft track last time. Miss Margarita was good behind Regal Magnus in a Fillies and Mares BM75 on the 9th of April. She looks to have come back in good order and gets in with 57kg for Spain. Baker's Dozen is racing well and this looks easier than the last couple she's contested. Wise And Happy is the best performed horse in the race and the 62kg (-2kg for O'Donnell) he will carry shows that. Might be a bit much first up. Rhythamtic has only missed a place once in 8 career starts and has won his last two. Belaeguer is always around the mark in this grade.
Bets: Too many chances in a really open affair. No bets.
Sandown Lakeside
The track is rated a Good (4) with no rain forecast before Wednesday. The rail is out 3m the entire circuit.
Race 6 1600m Ladbrokes Handicap - 40k
Three-Years-Old. BenchMark 70. No sex restriction. Handicap.
Loyalty Man, Oxbow, Flying Geepee and New Celebre are amongst those that can go forward. The pace looks reasonable without being too strong.
Burton was up to 1600m for the first time at his 3rd start with the blinkers on for the first time and won by 11L so it's fair to say they switched him on. He has drawn 16 here but I am banking on the fact that he is a horse with considerable upside. Gagosion ran well in the Mornington Guineas last time out and must be a danger. Loyalty Man won after a freshen up and is another horse with ability.
Bets: Think Burton has a fair bit of talent. 1 unit win bet.
